Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to stop drinking before starting medication?
Not always. Some medications, such as oral Naltrexone, can be started while you are reducing alcohol use. Others, like Acamprosate or Disulfiram, are typically started after stopping alcohol. Your provider will guide timing based on your goals and clinical needs.

Is counseling required?
No. Counseling is optional and available for individuals who want additional support alongside medication or relapse-prevention strategies.

What medications do you use for alcohol use disorder?
Treatment is individualized and may include non-addictive, evidence-based medications such as:

  • Oral Naltrexone – reduces cravings and the rewarding effects of alcohol

  • Acamprosate – supports abstinence and reduces post-cessation cravings

  • Disulfiram (Antabuse) – creates an aversive reaction to alcohol to support abstinence

  • Other supportive medications may be considered based on symptoms such as anxiety, sleep disturbance, or mood concerns

Vivitrol® (injectable naltrexone) is offered  in the section below.

What does “Non-Full MAT” mean?
This program does not include daily clinic visits, mandatory group therapy, or intensive program requirements. Care focuses on outpatient medication management with optional counseling and personalized clinical support.

How long will I be on medication?
Treatment length varies depending on your goals, progress, and response to medication. Your provider will work with you to adjust your plan over time.

How often are appointments?

  • Medication management only: Monthly provider visits

  • Medication + counseling: Monthly provider visits plus a 60-minute counseling session

Is this program outpatient?
Yes. You live at home while attending scheduled appointments.

Is this confidential?
Yes. All services are private, HIPAA-compliant, and judgment-free.

How do I know if this program is right for me?
This program may be a good fit if you:

  • Want structured, outpatient care

  • Prefer non-addictive medication options

  • Are ready to reduce or stop alcohol use

Patient Education for Vivitrol

1. Eligibility & Safety

  • Vivitrol is intended for adults who are already opioid-free
  • For alcohol use disorder, patients should have stopped drinking for a few days before the first injection.
  • Not recommended for patients with severe liver disease, allergies to naltrexone, or certain medical conditions—screening is required.

2. Side Effects & What to Watch For

  • Common side effects: injection site soreness, nausea, headache, fatigue, mild dizziness.
  • Rare but serious risks: allergic reaction, liver problems. Your PMHNP will monitor labs as needed.
  • Patients should report any unusual symptoms immediately.

Alcohol Use Disorder Treatment with vivitrol

Personalized, empowering care to help you reclaim freedom and a healthier relationship with alcohol.

3. Lifestyle & Expectations

  • Vivitrol works best when combined with supportive care, such as therapy, counseling, or peer support, even in a non-MAT clinic.
  • It reduces cravings but does not eliminate the need for behavioral strategies.
  • Alcohol may be less pleasurable while on Vivitrol, but it does not make drinking safe—relapse can still occur.

4. Pre-Injection Requirements

  • Patients should be alcohol-free for at least 3–7 days (depending on provider guidance) before the injection.
  • Inform the provider of all medications, supplements, and medical conditions.

5. Follow-Up & Monitoring

  • Monthly visits ensure the medication is effective, side effects are minimal, and your recovery plan is progressing.
  • Labs or additional assessments may be scheduled periodically for safety monitoring.

6. Emergency Guidance

  • Seek immediate medical attention for signs of severe allergic reaction (rash, swelling, trouble breathing) or severe liver-related symptoms (yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, severe fatigue).

    • Clinically inconsistent

  • Sent to a certified laboratory for confirmatory testing
